How to Prepare for Countertop Installation: Template Day and Install Day

How to prepare for countertop installation: have your cabinets final and your sink and faucet on site before template day, then book your plumber to disconnect before tear-out and reconnect after installation. On installation day, clear the counters and sink base, open a path from the door to the kitchen and keep pets in a closed room. These steps keep both visits short and on schedule.

Summary

  • Template day needs final cabinets and the sink and faucet on site.
  • Your plumber visits twice: before tear-out and after installation.
  • Clear counters, the sink base and a path to the kitchen before installation.
  • Installation follows 7 business days after template.

Before Template Day

Template day is when we measure your cabinets and make the pattern for your countertops. Everything that affects the shape of the stone must be decided before we arrive.

Template day checklist

Cabinets installed and finalWe measure the cabinets as they are; moving them later changes the stone
Sink on siteThe cutout is made for your exact sink model
Faucet chosenHole count and position depend on it
Cooktop or range specsCooktops need exact cutouts; ranges need exact gaps

Book Your Plumber for Two Short Visits

We don't do plumbing, so your plumber disconnects the sink, faucet, disposal and dishwasher before tear-out, and reconnects them after the new countertop is in. We give you both dates as soon as your template is scheduled.

Our article do countertop installers do plumbing explains who does what and how to time the two visits.

The Evening Before Installation Day

A few minutes of preparation saves time and protects your home.

Clear Everything

Empty the counters, the cabinets under the sink and any upper shelf directly above the work area.

Open a Path

Stone pieces are heavy and long. Move furniture, rugs and decor between the door and the kitchen.

Plan for Pets and Kids

Doors stay open while stone is carried in. Keep pets in a closed room and kids away from the work area.

Expect Some Noise and Dust

Tear-out of an old top can be noisy.

Right After Installation

Before the crew leaves, we walk through the work with you and check seams, edges and the sink. Your plumber can reconnect the water lines 24 hours after the installation time, and then the sink and counters are ready to use.

Your plumber. We don't do any plumbing work.
