How to Replace Countertops Without Replacing Cabinets

You can replace countertops without replacing cabinets when the cabinets are solid, level and dry, and when you are happy with the layout. The old top is removed, the cabinets are checked and shimmed if needed, a new template is taken and the stone is installed 7 business days later. Expect a few details to change, such as the backsplash, the sink type and sometimes the cabinet top edges.

Summary

  • Solid, level, dry cabinets can carry new stone.
  • The old top comes off, then we template the cabinets as they are.
  • The backsplash and sink usually change with the countertop.
  • Moving the sink or adding an island usually means new cabinets.

What a Countertop-Only Job Involves

  1. Your plumber disconnects the sink and appliances.
  2. The old top is removed, a separate line on your quote.
  3. We check level and shim where needed.
  4. We template the cabinets as they are now.
  5. The new stone is installed 7 business days later, and your plumber reconnects.

What Else Usually Changes With the Countertop

The Backsplash

Removing an old top often damages the bottom of a tile backsplash. Plan a new backsplash at the same time.

The Sink

Moving from a drop-in to an undermount sink is common with stone. See our guide on undermount vs farmhouse sink.

Seams

Slightly uneven older cabinets make level shimming important for tight joints; read about countertop seams.

Refreshing the Cabinets You Keep

New stone often makes old cabinets look tired. Painting, new doors or new hardware can be done before the template, but painting the boxes is easier once the old top is off. See our kitchen countertop replacement service, or browse more kitchen and bath design ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can new countertops go on old cabinets?

Yes, if the cabinets are solid, level and dry.

Will removing the old countertop damage my cabinets?

Usually not. Tile tops set in mortar take more care to remove.

Do I need a new backsplash?

Often, because the bottom row of an old backsplash is damaged when the top comes off.

Can I paint my cabinets after the new countertop is in?

Yes, but it is easier to paint before the template.

Is it cheaper to keep my cabinets?

Yes. A countertop-only job avoids the cabinet cost and is faster.
